Reduce
Firstly waste is the primary sin. If it isn't wasted in the first place it doesn't need to be reused or recycled.
waste:
- Change incandescent light bulbs for the lower energy equivalents see A greener house
- Avoid over packaging - buy food loose where possible see A greener garden
- Compost at home using a composter, compost heap or wormery. Use it for your garden or planters, or give it to a gardener you know. see A greener garden
- Use mechanical power e.g wind up radios and torches...or solar powered garden lights, calculators etc see A greener house
- Share or swap things like magazines,books,CDs
- Repair things if you can using local shops, like shoes and clothes.
- Hire equipment which you use only occasionally, or club together with friends and share.
- Avoid disposable items.
Reuse
- Reuse paper including wrapping paper, bags, postal packaging, boxes and padded bags.
- Refill your bottles and jars. Reuse plastic spray bottles for the garden
- Reuse shopping bags especially plastic carrier bags.
- Donate unwanted items to charities .Items such as spectacles, mobile phones, printer & toner cartridges, foreign currency, aluminium foil and postage stamps can all be sent for charitable recycling.
- Use rechargeable and refillable products.
- Buy products made from recycled materials. see Recycling
Recycle (see also Recycling)
- Recycling facilities in town or neighbouring towns- use them as much as you can!
- Garden and food waste (all cooked and uncooked food waste - including meat, bones, fruit and veg peelings, tea bags, egg shells, left-overs etc) can be placed in your green bin.
- Organic materials such as peelings, egg shells, tea bags, torn or scrumpled up paper, tissues and card etc can be composted at home. see A greener garden
