                                                    Reduce- Reuse- Recycle

Reduce

Firstly waste is the primary sin. If it isn't wasted in the first place it doesn't need to be reused or recycled.

Reduce waste:

  • Change incandescent light bulbs for the lower energy equivalents see A greener house
  • Avoid over packaging - buy food loose where possible see A greener garden
  • Compost at home using a composter, compost heap or wormery. Use it for your garden or planters, or give it to a gardener you know. see A greener garden
  • Use mechanical power e.g wind up radios and torches...or solar powered garden lights, calculators etc see A greener house
  • Share or swap things like magazines, books,CDs
  • Repair things if you can using local shops, like shoes and clothes.
  • Hire equipment which you use only occasionally, or club together with friends and share.
  • Avoid disposable items.

Reuse

  • Reuse paper including wrapping paper, bags, postal packaging, boxes and padded bags.
  • Refill your bottles and jars. Reuse plastic spray bottles for the garden
  • Reuse shopping bags especially plastic carrier bags.
  • Donate unwanted items to charities .Items such as spectacles, mobile phones, printer & toner cartridges, foreign currency, aluminium foil and postage stamps can all be sent for charitable recycling.
  • Use rechargeable and refillable products.
  • Buy products made from recycled materials. see Recycling

Recycle (see also Recycling)

  • Recycling facilities in town or neighbouring towns- use them as much as you can!
  • Garden and food waste (all cooked and uncooked food waste - including meat, bones, fruit and veg peelings, tea bags, egg shells, left-overs etc) can be placed in your green bin.
  • Organic materials such as peelings, egg shells, tea bags, torn or scrumpled up paper, tissues and card  etc can be composted at home. see A greener garden
  • There are facilities for recycling batteries, waste oil, paints etc at the Oswestry Waste Disposal Facility.
