Ellesmere Methodist Church has replaced its incandescent light bulbs with low energy equivalents.

The Marches Energy Agency's Project Carbon team carried out the make-over as part of the Low Carbon Communities Project for Ellesmere in 2007-8.

It is saving an estimated £87 per annum and 0.42 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Mrs Vera Roberts of Ellesmere started to record her yearly electricity consumption (in kWh) in 2001.

In 2005, after reading an article about low-energy light bulbs, Mrs Roberts started to change her existing old style incandescent bulbs with low energy equivalents.

By 2008 the house contained no more old style

bulbs leading to a reduction in electricity consumption of 1200 kWhs, and an annual saving of about £150.

The Washing Well Launderette in Ellesmere discovered that they could make significant savings by switching to energy efficient appliances.

Following a ‘Low Carbon Communities’ presentation to Ellesmere Chamber of Commerce, Washing Well’s proprietor began to look at the energy consumption of the laundrette with the assistance of Marches Energy Agency's Project Carbon team.

By simply installing a more efficient hot water boiler and more efficient tumble dryers the business would save around £2,500 in gas alone - a saving of over 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
