In 2008-2009 the Marches Energy Agency, based in Shrewsbury chose Ellesmere as one of three communities in Shropshire to work on reducing their carbon output.

Much of global warming appears to be caused by excessive carbon dioxide released from fossil fuels, so anything to reduce fuel and energy consumption in homes and businesses goes a long way to reducing our effect on the environment.

Within the year Marches Energy Agency managed to undertake energy surveys in nearly 50 homes and over 40 businesses in Ellesmere , with over 700 energy saving measures installed. These included a £42,000 grant towards the Primary School's pool solar heating.

Together all these measures will reduce the carbon dioxide produced each year in the community of Ellesmere by 560 tonnes and will also save the businesses and residents of Ellesmere over £100,000 in reduced fuel bills.

Ellesmere Goes Green was started in response to this ground breaking work which was so well received by Ellesmere residents and businesses alike.
